HJERTMAN / JOHNSON [Sweden to America]
We began our search with the traveling documents "Victor" used when leaving his homeland which identified him as Johan Viktor Johansson and knew that he chose to be known as Victor J Johnson in America. He and his brothers all gave "Gammalkil" as their previous residence when emigrating. Their marriage licenses and death certificates provided the names of their parents (documents which did not always provide exactly the same information). We certainly did not have much upon which to base research in Sweden.
In more recent years, however, many of the old church books have been transcribed and many are even available online in the form of digital images of the original pages. This has made original records available to many more family researchers who are eager to peruse the records of the births, deaths, and marriages of those residing in the parish.
What is even more exciting for those whose family emigrated from Gammalkil, Östergötlands län, Sweden, is a project by the "Old Homestead Association" in that parish. Their goal is to document each of the houses in the parish, showing all the inhabitants of each from the year 1600 through today. There were at one time around 300 dwellings in Gammalkil. They have already made great progress on this huge undertaking. Check it out at http://www.gammalkilshembygdsforening.se . [Note: the site is in Swedish but is quite easy to navigate even for those who lack skill in that language. For instance, if you look at "Äldre begyggelse" (older houses) you can search on places "Sök plats" and type Pirum and you get a link where you find Anders Hjertman and clicking on the "DIS-nummer" at the bottom of the page gives a list of his relatives. Also remember, the individuals listed are not always complete "family groups" as this is a work in progress.]
The following is what we understand of this Swedish branch of our family, as evidenced by documents discovered to date (January 2014) -
Generation D
STINA PERSDOTTER was a "Piga i Gräskulla*, Östra Tollstad, who was born December 26, 1760 in Mantorp, Veta (E), Östergötland." She was the daughter of PER MÅNSSON and STINA ERIKSDOTTER. In 1797 she married ERLAND IVARSSON , a bonde/lantbrukare [farmer] in Pirum who was born in Mjölby (E), Östergötland, Sweden. Stina and Erland resided in Pirum (Lilla Gävbo), Gammalkil, Östergötlands län, Sweden. Nothing further is known about Stina or her husband, Erland Ivarsson, at this time. The house pictured here is the one in Pirum today, built in 1890, no doubt to replace [and update] the earlier dwelling. Generation C
ANDERS HJERTMAN [AKA ANDERS HJERTMAN ERLANDSSON (or) KARLEN], a soldier, was born November 11, 1786 in Östra Tollstad (E), Östergötland, Sweden to STINA PERSDOTTER and an unknown father. He was christened on November 12, 1786 in Östra Tollstad. Some records show him as ANDERS HJERTMAN ERLANDSSON, identifying him as the son of his mother's husband, Erland. Church records in Gammalkil, Östergötland show Anders Hjertman [no "Karlen"] married GRETA JONSDOTTER January 25, 1810. Greta was born September 27, 1781, also in Östra Tollstad (E), Östergötland, Sweden and was the daughter of JÖNS NILSSON and KERSTIN NILSDOTTER. She was baptized on September 28, 1781 in Östra Tollstad and died of a fever on May 8, 1860 in Fattigstugan [poorhouse], Prästgården, Gammalkil (E). She was buried May 13, 1860 in Gammalkil just over four years after Anders' death in Gammalkil on March 24, 1856. [Note: the entry for Greta's death is interesting in that it refers to 79 year old Greta as being GRETA HJERTMAN rather than Jonsdotter as was the custom at that time.] Nothing further is known about Greta or her parents at this time.
The church book records identify the following children of ANDERS HJERTMAN and GRETA JONSDOTTER:
- i. ANDERS ANDERSSON HJERTMAN was born September 27, 1809 in Pirum (Lilla Gävbo), Gäfbo, Gammalkil, Östergötlands län, Sweden and died January 18, 1879 in Viby, Östergötlands län, Sweden of "reumatic feber" according to the dödbok. Later that year they removed to Viby, Östergötlands län, Sweden where ADOLPH was born December 14, 1848. J. Oscar Reis. Her final destination was L'Anse, Baraga County, MI. [The
headstone for Ellen Peterson Johnson gives her date of birth as July 5,
1882 -- which would make her 21 on her birthday in 1903. She gave her
age as 21 on April 22, 1903 when she left Sweden. The microfiche of the
"Emigrant Index for Östergötlands län" shows Elin Matilda Petersson,
born 1881, left from Gammalkil parish, Östergötlands län departing from
the port of Göteborg, Sweden in 1903.] "ELLEN" PETERSON married "VICTOR"
J JOHNSON in Ishpeming, Marquette County, MI on June 11, 1904. Their marriage record gives her father's name as K. PETERSSON but does not name her mother. Other records indicate that her parents were CARL FREDRIK PETERSSON and THILDA ANDERSDOTTER. Ellen
